A to Z – A new idea sees the light of day!

A fact: More and more online solutions and digital learning resources are being used in education. Today, schools have access to more than 70 providers and various learning resources. The start-up company Hypatia Learning has created a solution that focuses on the actual learning and pedagogy. Lene Thorsen and Innsikteriet have had the pleasure of being part of this project for the past year and a half.

What is the A-Z solution from Hypatia Learning?

Under the new GDPR rules for data protection, there are stricter requirements for how digital traces are managed and used. Hypatia Learning has therefore created an infrastructure that allows the school owner to take responsibility for the management of all information and data produced by students. They receive data from all platforms in one place. This gives the school the opportunity to decide which services to offer the teacher, student and parents in one solution.

Hypatia Learning will also create a solution where students can evaluate their own efforts at school, which will hopefully simplify everyday life for both students and teachers. Such a system will provide a better overview of the individual student’s progress and activity. The aim is for teachers to have a better overview and be able to better adapt learning to the individual student.

We're entering a completely new market where learning and technology have focused on school administration and digital resources. Few have focused on value, actual learning and pedagogy. We want to do something about that.

The insight studio as an early partner

Hypatia Learning is a start-up company that currently consists of two employees and is part of the co-working community Blender in Fredrikstad.

They started up just over 2 years ago and Innsikteriet has had the pleasure of being part of this project for the past 1 1/2 years. Erlend Øverby, the founder himself, has been clear from the start that he wanted assistance in the insight work, to free up time to do what he does best.

"Having Innsikteriet on the journey from the start has been valuable. They know what I don't," says Erlend Øverby of Hypatia Learning.

How good is the idea? A step-by-step process

An important goal early on in the project was to increase the insight and overview of what information teachers wanted about students’ digital behavior. Gaining an understanding of how teachers envisioned such an infrastructure and solution was important. In the first phase, two workshops were held to find out what the teachers thought of the idea, in order to meet their needs and improve their working day. We aimed for participation from both primary and secondary schools and VGS. We also talked to students at the teacher training college to get the views of future teachers.

Having Innsikteriet on the journey from the start has been valuable. They can do what I can't.

In phase 2, we invited the same teachers to a new workshop to evaluate an adapted concept based on the findings from the previous round. This allowed us to go more in-depth and the teachers who participated felt a positive sense of involvement. In addition, we conducted in-depth interviews with the school owner to ensure an understanding of their views, thoughts and not least expectations before a possible implementation. In phase 3, the refined solution was tested at two selected secondary schools. After a trial period, we conducted interviews with both students and teachers. The findings from this have led us to conduct a new round of testing to further improve the solution.

Neutral eyes provide credibility among investors Øverby emphasizes the value of neutral eyes and written reports. In the dialog with his investors and others, he sees the value of the findings coming from a third party, and not from his own research.

The fact that the findings are objective and from a recognized third party makes the findings appear more credible to investors.
